The main objective of the project as to assess the pollution status of Thane Creek and Ulhas river estuary, identify plant or animal species which can remove toxic metals from the environment and to suggest mitigation strategies to minimize pollution.

The study was conducted through 24 stations (12 stations from each ecosystem). It involved teh assessment of abiotic and biotic components which included water and soil parameters, mangroves, flora, phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrobnthic fauna and fishery.
